Kibong Rhee’s work is characterized by a sublime visual vocabulary and refined sense of detail coupled with an inventive use of materials. Inspired by questions of flux and impermanence, his paintings and sculptures explore the conceptual meaning and mechanics of change. Rhee frequently employs the theme of impermanence – a physical process found in nature that arouses a sense of beauty, desire, and nostalgia. Rhee’s work focuses on the point where physical phenomenology can elicit a transcendental experience. Especially fascinated by the many manifestations of water, Rhee’s poetic tableaux evoke a rare balance of sensuality and meditative distance. Born in 1957, Kibong Rhee graduated from the Seoul National University. He was awarded the Grand Prix at the National Art Exhibition in 1986 and since then has exhibited extensively. His work is in collections worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Hoam Art Museum, Seoul, ZKM Museum, Karlsruhe, Germany, and Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art. Rhee has been included in the Moscow Biennale 2011, Busan Biennale 2010, Biennale Cuvée 2009, the 2008 Sevilla Biennale, and the Singapore Biennale 2008.
